America’s regional 250th Anniversary celebration wants you

CURRIE – Moores Creek Battleground Association in collaboration with regional partners is actively planning a week of celebrating America’s 250th and the 250th Commemoration of the Battle at Moores Creek Bridge on Feb. 21-28, 2026.

“The anniversary year is not that far away,” said Jim Buell, President of the Moores Creek Battleground Association. “We have assembled a list of active committee leadership, and we are currently accepting volunteers to participate in this historic week.”

In 2026 the inaugural North Carolina First in Freedom Festival will celebrate 250 years of our Nation’s story and culture viewed through the lens of historical North Carolina events and the arts.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime volunteer experience,” said Matthew Woods, Superintendent of Moores Creek National Battlefield. “The 250thanniversary will only happen once in our lives, and this is an opportunity to be a part of history.”

Local counties, cities, towns, and communities are invited to unite with local historians and historical sites to host events and activities as well as our arts community and business community.

“We are kicking off America’s birthday in Southeast North Carolina because we are the First in Freedom,” said Buell.

Buell added that volunteers can enlist in an area of their passion and expertise, such as finance, marketing, fundraising, volunteer coordinator, sponsorships, and unit leaders.

“The celebration committee encourages civic groups and professional organizations to join us in the implementation of a celebration to remember,” said Buell. “Groups such as Wilmington Area Hospitality Association has volunteered as well as many historical sites.”
